Franklin D. Roosevelt once said, “If civilization is to survive, we must cultivate the science of human relationships—the ability of all peoples, of all kinds, to live together, in the same world at peace.” Our success as a company depends on our ability to live and work together, no matter what our differences are. To celebrate diversity is to appreciate and value individual differences.
Many people think of cultural diversity as differences only in race, gender, and ethnic background, but it is much more. Cultural diversity also includes the many characteristics and experiences that make us each unique—religion, ability, age, physical characteristics, outside and professional interests, and work style, to name a few. These differences are important to our business. Diversity in the workplace ensures that our teams view issues from a variety of angles to develop approaches that might not have occurred to a group whose members share the same characteristics.
Despite our individual differences, as Taco employees we share many common values including integrity, quality of life, and hard work. We should also highlight two other values on our list—tolerance and respect. Being aware of our cultural diversity allows us to value the differences among our coworkers and our business partners, and see those differences as strengths, not weaknesses. This way of thinking helps position Taco for competitive challenges.
At Taco, we believe that diversity enriches our performance and products, the communities in which we live and work, and the lives of our employees. As our workforce continues to evolve and reflect the growing diversity of our communities and global marketplace, our efforts to understand, value and incorporate differences and to live and work together in peace becomes increasingly more important. It will ensure our continued success as a company. Taken together, our differences and our shared values make us stronger.
